Starting A Tanning Salon
The beauty care industry is still booming and seems to have hardly been touched by the economic recession that just ended. Revenues for the industry in 2010 exceeded $ 12 Billion. Opening at a tanning salon business is an expensive affair and is not well suited for the home or as part time work. An ideal location would be an area with a high population of working people such as a shopping mall, a grocery store warehouse etc. The equipment required to open an outfit such as tanning beds, staff compensation, space rentals and operating costs are quite high. The cost of running a tanning salon can exceed $120,000 per year. Tanning beds go for anywhere between $ 800 -10,000 depending on the specifications. Depending on your location, the rentals could go to over $ 30,000 per year.
When shopping for tanning beds, do not approach the company directly since some companies that sell these beds will hinder other companies that sell their brand from selling to you. Go for beds that are easy to service and that you can change the tanning bulbs and clean by yourself. State laws concerning tanning beds differ according to the state you are located in with some having no requirements while others require you to get a permit from the health department and consent cards from parents if your client is under age. Most states however, require tanning salons to be certified.
Tanning salons make most of their money from the sale of tanning lotions to their clients. Depending on your negotiating skills and the volume of your order, it is possible to get a discount of as much as 30% on the listed price for your lotions from your supplier. Body jewelry, purses and accessories also sell well in a tanning salon. Once you open your salon, it’s a good idea to advertise widely to let other people learn about your business. If you are in a good location, word of mouth may be enough. You can advertise on social networking media such as FaceBook and Twitter which can get you a good following. You can also arrange to have a free day once a month where you should offer your services free for your regular clients. Although not common, you can choose to start your salon at your own home or open a mobile salon. A salon offering sunless tans is increasingly becoming a more popular option with many clients especially with the media sensitizing the public about the dangers of ultraviolet light.
