Home Health Care Jobs
One of the fastest growing segments in the medical industry according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics is Home Health Care. Home health care jobs entail providing medical equipment and health care services to patients in their own homes as opposed to the more common mode of doing it in a health care facility. The home care industry is expected to experience explosive growth by as much as 50% in the coming years.
The state of health of the patient determines the length of time health care services will have to be delivered. Most home care providers work on a part time basis, in the evenings and during weekends. The objective of this type oh health care might be to either provide health care services to the patient or restoration of health. The patients who require this type of care are the disabled, older individuals, cognitively impaired or chronically ill patients. Professionals involved in home care jobs include dieticians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, pharmacists, speech/ language pathologists, home makers, home care aides and social aides.
Most patients are referred to a home care agency after a long period of hospitalization. It is advisable for patients who opt for this to have a complete medical check up that involves a mental health evaluation. The family and social setting around the patient also need to be carefully analyzed. Studies have proven that home care patients often recover faster than patients in a health facility due to the familiar surroundings and the support of family members. Home health aides provide a variety of services to the patient such as home making and house keeping tasks, changing bed linens, laundry, planning and preparing meals ,shopping for food etc. They also help bathe the patient and provide grooming services. They might also accompany patients to doctors’ appointments.
Home care aides and home health aides have almost similar tasks. There are however, some differences; e.g., home health aides work for a certified hospice or home health agency. These agencies receive government funding and have certain regulations they have to meet before they are approved for funding. They keep records of a patient’s general health status and progress while reporting to a care manager or supervisor. They perform basic medical procedures such as checking a patient’s pulse rate, breathing rate and temperature changes.
Home care aides are also known as personal attendants or homemakers and work for private or public agencies. They mostly work independently with their supervisors e.g. a qualified nurse, only visiting them periodically.
